Are you surrounded and covered in chemicals?

Doesn't sound good does it? But you probably are...

How do we know what chemical reactions are taking place on our bodies... Right now?
It takes less than a minute for your skin to absorb anything that comes into contact with it, absorbed straight into your bloodstream. So that cream that makes our skin soft, or magics away wrinkles, that most probably contains parabens, immune system disruptors and formaldehydes' - Those chemicals are now swimming around in your body.
We wouldn't drink one drop of formaldehyde, so why put it on our skin?

Your skin is your personal protection barrier against the world, keeping you clean and healthy - So why are we forcing it to absorb dirty chemicals that are bad for us?

Not many of these chemicals that are in everyday beauty products have been tested long term. The ones that have however, have been labelled Carcinogens, possible immune system disruptors, allergens...
Yet we are still using them, silently torturing our bodies, expecting them to carry on as normal.
Ever wonder why you're just generally tired? Maybe you're working too hard? Insomnia? Mood swings? Symptoms of a bad diet? Quite possible... But what if you already have a healthy diet?
Ever wondered that your beauty regime may just be exhausting your body because your body is constantly on detox overdrive?

Having M.E (as much as I hate admitting it) And a number of other problems, my body
is pretty sensitive, and I will react a lot quicker to bad things that a regular person.

With every relapse I have with my health, I have developed sensitivities, usually with food.
But with one particular relapse, I noticed that every time I used my usual beauty products,
I seemed to worse, one way or another.

I decided to do some research - The more documentaries I watched, and the more reading I did, the more shocked I became. I can't believe that these chemicals have been deemed safe, even in small amounts. You have to remember that these chemical ladened  products have not been tested along other random products... So by combining lots of different products, who knows what chemical shit storm you're conjuring up on your body!

I found a lot of useful information on this website
http://www.ewg.org/skindeep/
Type in an ingredient you are curious about and the website will tell you all about it, including its toxicity risk. It has a very simple traffic light system to determine toxicity which makes it very easy for you to decide whether to apply that particular ingredient/product to your skin.

Could I help myself feel better by cutting out as many chemicals from my life as possible?

After finding out about these awful secrets of the beauty industry, I decided to test this theory.
I first thing I did was swap the beauty products I used everyday, for natural alternatives -Starting with shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body moisturizer.
I cut out deodorant altogether so that my body could start detoxing properly.

On just the first day, I felt an immediate difference!
I still had the usual M.E symptoms (lets face it this is no miracle cure)
but I didn't feel so dizzy whilst washing my hair,  So a small, but noticeable improvement.
As for the natural body butter, I didn't become suddenly lethargic whilst rubbing it into my skin, I could almost hear my skin saying,
'Thank you for giving me something that I can actually use!'
Just the first day of switching a few products, I am less dizzy, less lethargic, and my morning brain fog isn't as bad as it usually is.

Fantastic.

Any improvement is good - However small it may be

I am still struggling with my health daily, but one thing for certain is that I will avoid every product I can that is not made with safe, natural ingredients.
I've even banned my partner from wearing his aftershave, because just the smell would send me dizzy, sometimes instant vertigo!

I haven't got the energy to explain exactly what these cosmetic industries use to make your everyday beauty product regime - But trust me, it's really not good!

Thinking of buying your loved ones some fancy hygiene products this Christmas?
Why not look into getting them something that's made completely from natural ingredients?
If you think this is a great idea, or just curious, I have a few tips to get you started :-)
Certified organic is a good place to start - They can still contain chemicals that arn't great, but there will be far less of them for your body to deal with.
The less ingredients the better! My shampoo contains around 5 ingredients - Yes, just 5 when I buy the scent free bottle! The scented one contains natural essential oils.
I like to add my own fragrances to the scent free shampoo using my essential oils, like lavender, as it's really good for the hair, scalp, and general well being, making me feel calm and relaxed, which is just what I need most days.

So here's the tips Simplified
1 - Start easy, try certified organic products
2 - The less ingredients the better
3 - ideally buy perfume free, unless scented with natural essential oils.

Just because it's natural - Doesn't always mean it's good for you...

Petroleum Jelly, benzyl alcohol, and other related ingredients are all from an organic origin, but they can turn out to be carcinogenic! (a carcinogen is a chemical that can cause cancer)
Because marketing is so clever these days, something like this is easy to sell. They tell the truth - That the ingredients are natural and organic - from Mother Nature itself.
So, us, the consumers, ASSUME it's safe!

Just because these chemicals don't make us drunk or high, doesn't mean they aren't damaging our bodies.

Marketing non-organic products is just as easy!
The major companies deem them safe - That's pretty much all they need to get started.
They add maybe one natural ingredient in a very small amount, then hand it over to the marketing companies to work their magic,
Draw up some pretty packaging, clever words

(including Natural - because 'Natural' has no solid definition in the marketing world!

That chemical ladened product suddenly looks healthy and luxurious...

It really isn't..

So if you're thinking about lowering your domestic chemical exposure, here's a heads up on what products I like to use, you might like to try them too :-)

Body moisturizer - shop bought natural body butter, Plain coconut oil or handmade body butter. Best used just after towel drying as it absorbs much better on slightly damp skin.
Foaming face wash, about £8, Helios cream for my face, about £5
Lip balms, about £3.50 each

Suma Shampoo, 500ml for less than £5

any antiperspirant.

This Natural Hero cream
A great alternative to the chemical riddled muscle rubs.

The cheapest and loveliest scented candles I can find.
Heaven Scent website

Less than £3 each or about £7 for a large candle set in a glass open top jar.

Can I make my own beauty products, easily?
From my experience, it's not easy to make everything, but the easiest thing to make if you have the time and energy, is body butter.

It may take some getting used to, as it feels entirely different from what we regularly use. But it's worth it!

It's something fun to do, and it only needs doing every month or so, depending how quickly you use it.

All the ingredients are easy to buy online, and with the same recipe, you can make different scents, or add sea salt crystals to make a wonderful body scrub.

You only need about 3 ingredients to get started.
2 solids, like coconut oil and shea butter, and one liquid, for eg, peach kernel oil.

Here's a simple recipe to get you going - from here on, you can experiment changing
the oils to fit your skins needs.
50g Coconut oil
50g shea butter or cocoa butter, or 25g of both if you wish. 50g almond oil or other liquid oil of your choice
On a very low heat, melt the shea or cocoa butter (this takes time, but be patient)
Add the coconut oil in small lumps and stir gently till it's disappeared.
Leave aside to cool
Once the liquid turns from transparent to opaque, but still soft, pour in the almond oil. and with an electric whisk, whisk until the mixture has changed colour.

Transfer your body butter into a resealable jar and it's ready to use whenever you want!
The texture may change depending on the temperature, but it will give you the same results.

if you're feeling adventurous, why not split the mixture into 2 portions, adding grapefruit essential oil to one, and lavender to the other? you have instantly made a day and night cream!

You might find massaging the body butter on before you have a shower works better for you (be careful as it can be very slippery)
but I prefer to apply immediately after towel drying, and hanging around naked for a while, until it sinks in. (about 15 minutes)

Being relaxed with yourself naked is good therapy, try it some time!
